Middletown, KY History
Middletown today is alot different than its humble beggingins dating back to 1797. Prior to becoming known as “Middletown” It was refered to as “Middle Station.” Why “middle” you may ask? Well it was the half way point between Louisville and Shelbyville. Middletown was a favorite stop for weary travelers coming or going from both Louisville and Shelbyville. Fast forward to the 1840s and The Weatherby House was a popular stop with a hotel, stagecoach stop and eatery providing travelers a much needed rest and repair for the many horses and coaches that came traveling through its roads.
Middletown in the 1900s
In the early 1900s a railroad was constructed between Louisville and Shelbyville which brought even more hustle and bustle to the city center. This allowed workers to travel to and from Shelbyville & Louisville and everywhere in between. Like todays outer lying counties of Shelby county, Spencer County and others. Many have turned from farming communities to “bedroom communities or more “suburban” communities. The same happened to Middletown in the early to mid 1900s.
Automobile Travel
In the mid 1930s the ever popular automobile became the #1 means of travel and the railroad diminished.
